π₯¨ Enjoy the warm, soft texture of homemade pretzels with this Easy Homemade Soft Pretzels recipe perfect for beginners.
π Simple steps guide you to create classic, chewy pretzels with a deliciously authentic flavor and a satisfying crust.
Ingredients
2 and 1/4 teaspoons (7g) instant or active dry yeast (1 standard packet)
1 tablespoon brown or granulated sugar
1 and 1/2 cups (360ml) warm water (around 100Β°F/38Β°C)
1 tablespoon (14g) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
1 teaspoon salt
3 and 3/4 to 4 cups (469 500g) all-purpose flour, plus more if needed
Coarse salt for topping
1/2 cup (120g) baking soda for the baking soda bath
9 cups (2.13L) water for the baking soda bath
Instructions
1-First, in a large bowl, whisk the yeast and sugar into the warm water and let it sit for 1 minute until it bubbles. This step wakes up the yeast and sets the foundation for a soft dough.
2-Next, stir in the melted butter and salt, then add 3 cups of flour and mix until combined to form a sticky base.
3-Gradually mix in the remaining flour until the dough feels slightly tacky and pulls away from the bowl sides, which helps create that chewy texture.
4-Knead the dough by hand or with a mixer for 3 to 5 minutes to make it smooth and elastic. Cover and let it rest for 10 to 30 minutes, allowing it to rise just enough for flavor.
5-Preheat your oven to 400Β°F (204Β°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper. Divide the dough into 75g pieces and roll each into a 20 to 22-inch rope on a floured surface. Shape each rope into a pretzel by forming a circle, twisting the ends, and pressing them down firmly.
6-Bring the baking soda and water to a boil in a large pot for the bath. Boil each shaped pretzel for 20 to 30 seconds, then drain and place on the baking sheets. Sprinkle with coarse salt and bake for 12 to 15 minutes until theyβre dark golden brown. Let them cool a bit before serving warm for the best taste.
Notes
β³ Allow longer rise times to develop deeper flavor.
π Use the baking soda bath for authentic pretzel flavor and chewy texture.
β Avoid salting before baking if making pretzels ahead of time to prevent sogginess.
