Description

🥩 Savor the rich, comforting flavors of Southern-style Smothered Steak with tender cube steaks cooked in a savory, thick gravy.
🧅 This recipe is perfect for homestyle meals, combining crispy-fried steaks and flavorful onion-topped gravy for a hearty dish.

Ingredients

– 4 pieces cube steaks Base protein for tenderness

– 1 cup + 3 tablespoons flour Dredging and thickening

– 1/2 cup oil Frying and roux base

– 1 teaspoon seasoning 1

– 1/2 teaspoon seasoning 2

– 1/2 teaspoon seasoning 3

– 1 teaspoon seasoning 4

– 2 cups water

– 1 bouillon cube

– 1 large sliced onion

Instructions

1-After frying, leave 2-3 tablespoons of oil in the skillet and add 3 tablespoons of flour to make a roux by browning it gently.

2-Pour in 2 cups of water and add 1 bouillon cube along with any remaining seasoning, stirring until the gravy thickens to a smooth consistency.

3-Return the steaks to the skillet, top them with 1 large sliced onion arranged in rings, cover, and simmer for 30-40 minutes until everything melds together.

4-For adjustments, try adding mushrooms to the gravy or swapping the oil for bacon grease to enhance the flavor profile.

Notes

🍄 Add sliced mushrooms while making gravy for extra richness.
🥓 Use bacon grease or lard instead of oil for deeper flavor.
⏲️ Simmer covered gently to ensure steaks become tender without drying out.
