Description

🍔 Experience the classic comfort of sloppy joes with a rich, tangy sauce and tender ground meat that’s perfect for any weeknight dinner.
⏱️ This recipe is quick and easy, making it a great choice when you want a hearty meal ready in under 40 minutes.

Ingredients

– 1 lb (approximately 450g) lean ground beef (85-90% lean; can substitute with ground chicken, turkey, pork, or a blend)

– 1/2 small green bell pepper (seeded and finely diced) or 1/4 to 1/2 cup chopped bell pepper

– 1 small yellow or white onion, finely chopped (about 1/4 to 1/2 cup)

– 2 to 3 cloves garlic, minced or grated

– 15 oz (425g) tomato sauce (1 can)

– 1/4 to 1/3 cup ketchup

– 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

– 1 to 2 teaspoons yellow mustard or Dijon mustard (adjust to taste)

– 1 to 2 teaspoons brown sugar or molasses (adjust to taste)

– 1 tablespoon cooking oil (such as olive oil)

– 1/4 cup water (optional, helps adjust sauce consistency)

– 1 teaspoon kosher salt (divided, plus more as needed)

– 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper (plus more to taste)

– Optional seasonings: 1 teaspoon chili powder, 1 teaspoon paprika, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (for extra flavor)

– 5 to 6 hamburger buns, split and toasted (optional but recommended with butter)

– Optional toppings: pickle chips, hot sauce, or jalapeños for spice

Instructions

Step 1: Brown the Meat Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef or your chosen protein substitute. Cook while breaking it apart with a spatula until browned and no longer pink, about 5 to 8 minutes. Drain any excess fat to avoid greasiness.

Step 2: Cook the Vegetables Add finely chopped onions and diced green bell peppers to the skillet. Sauté until they are tender and translucent, about 5 to 8 minutes. This infuses the dish with extra flavor and texture.

Step 3: Add the Sauce Ingredients Stir in the tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce (or vegan alternative), apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly to combine all the flavors.

Step 4: Simmer the Mixture Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken just right.

Step 5: Adjust Seasonings Taste your sloppy joe mixture and adjust it as desired. Add chili powder or smoked paprika for additional depth and heat if preferred.

Step 6: Prepare the Buns Toast your buns or chosen bread alternatives in a skillet with butter or oil for added flavor and a crisp texture.

Step 7: Assemble and Serve Generously spoon the sloppy joe filling onto the toasted buns. Add optional toppings such as pickle chips, hot sauce, or jalapeños. Serve warm with your favorite sides or a fresh salad.

Notes

🍳 Use lean ground meat and drain excess fat to keep the texture pleasant and avoid greasiness.
🌶 Add hot sauce, jalapeños, or chili powder for a spicy kick.
🍞 Toast the hamburger buns with butter for extra flavor and crunch.
