Ingredients
2 ready-made pie crusts (for a deep-dish pan)
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
½ pound ground beef
½ pound Italian sausage, casings removed (optional)
1 cup pepperoni slices, divided
1½ cups pizza sauce or marinara
1 cup shredded cheddar or provolone cheese
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon garlic powder (for brushing crust)
½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
3 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing top crust)
Instructions
1. Cook ground beef and Italian sausage in a skillet over medium to medium-high heat until fully browned (about 5-7 minutes). Drain excess fat thoroughly and let cool slightly.
2. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
3. Press one pie crust into a deep-dish pie pan (minimum 2 inches deep), letting excess dough hang over the edges. Optionally brush bottom crust lightly with olive oil.
4. Sprinkle half the mozzarella cheese evenly over the bottom crust to form a moisture barrier.
5. Layer the cooked meat evenly over the cheese. Arrange about ¾ cup pepperoni slices on top.
6. Pour pizza sauce evenly over the pepperoni and meat. Sprinkle Italian seasoning, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, and red pepper flakes if using.
7. Add remaining mozzarella cheese and all cheddar/provolone cheese over the sauce. Arrange remaining pepperoni slices on top.
8. Roll out second pie crust and cover the filling. Trim excess dough leaving about ½-inch overhang. Fold and crimp edges tightly to seal. Cut small slits on top crust to vent steam.
9. Mix melted butter with remaining ½ teaspoon garlic powder and brush generously over top crust and edges.
10. Place pie on a baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes until crust is golden and filling hot. Cover crust edges with foil if browning too fast.
11. Remove pie from oven and let rest 5-10 minutes before slicing to allow layers to set.
