Description

🍩 Vermont Doughnut Holes are perfectly sweet and crispy treats that offer a delightful homemade indulgence.
πŸ”₯ This recipe provides easy frying tips to achieve golden, fluffy doughnut holes ideal for breakfast or anytime snacking.

Ingredients

Scale

5 cups vegetable oil (peanut oil recommended for frying)

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

2 to 4 tablespoons granulated sugar (to taste)

1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon table salt

1 large egg

1 cup milk

4 tablespoons melted butter

Instructions

1-Getting started with this recipe is exciting and straightforward, beginning with setting up your workspace. Pour oil about 1 inch deep into a skillet that’s roughly 10 inches wide and 2 1/2 inches deep, or use an electric frying pan for better control. Heat the oil to 350Β°F (177Β°C) to ensure your donut holes fry up golden and crisp.

2-Next, in one bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg if using, 2 to 4 tablespoons granulated sugar, 1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon table salt. In another bowl, whisk the wet ingredients: 1 cup milk and 1 large egg, then combine them with the dry mix and stir in 4 tablespoons of melted butter to form a thick batter.

3-Now, drop the batter in balls about 2 inches for larger holes or 1 1/2 inches for smaller ones into the hot oil using a cookie scoop or spoon. Fry for 2 minutes on the first side until deep brown, turning as needed, then flip and cook for another 2 minutes for larger ones or 1 1/2 minutes for smaller. Drain on paper towels, let cool, and serve warm or at room temperature, perhaps dusted with sugar or dipped in maple syrup or honey.

Notes

🍳 Using an electric frying pan helps maintain consistent oil temperature for even frying.
🌾 Substitute whole wheat flour partially or fully for a different texture and flavor.
⏲️ Monitor frying time closely to achieve perfect golden and crispy texture without burning.
