cream cheese wontons

Description

🧀 Cream Cheese Wontons are a crispy, creamy appetizer that’s quick to make at home and perfect for entertaining or snacking.
🍽️ Whether fried or baked, these wontons offer a rich, flavorful filling with a satisfying crunch, customizable to your taste preferences.

Ingredients

– 8 ounces (about 225 grams) softened cream cheese

– 24 wonton wrappers (or 22-24 depending on batch size)

– ½ teaspoon onion powder

– ½ to 1½ teaspoons powdered sugar (granulated sugar may also be used)

– 1 beaten egg or water (for sealing wrappers)

– Oil for frying (canola or peanut oil recommended for neutral flavor and high smoke point)

– Optional: 2 teaspoons minced chives or 2 tablespoons sliced green onion

– Optional: Cooking spray

– Dipping sauce of choice such as sweet and sour or Thai sweet chili sauce

Instructions

1-Prepare filling: In a bowl, blend 8 ounces of softened cream cheese with ½ to 1½ teaspoons powdered sugar and ½ teaspoon onion powder until smooth. Fold in optional minced chives or sliced green onion for extra flavor.

2-Assemble wontons: Lay a wonton wrapper flat on a clean surface. Place about 1 teaspoon of the cream cheese mixture in the center of each wrapper.

3-Seal edges: Lightly moisten the edges of each wrapper with beaten egg or water. Fold two opposite corners together and pinch tightly to seal, then bring the remaining corners together and seal again to form a tight, secure package. Alternatively, fold diagonally into a triangle and pinch edges firmly.

4-Cook wontons:

  • Frying: Heat 2-4 inches of canola or peanut oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry 5-6 wontons at a time, turning occasionally, for 3–5 minutes until golden and crisp. Drain on paper towels or wire rack.
  • Baking: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Place wontons on a greased baking sheet, spray lightly with cooking spray, and bake for 5-7 minutes until golden and crisp. For extra crispiness, bake 9 minutes then broil 2-3 minutes.

5-Serve: Arrange wontons on a serving plate. Garnish with optional chives or green onions and accompany with dipping sauces such as sweet and sour or Thai sweet chili sauce. Serve immediately for best texture.

Notes

🌡️ Use a frying thermometer to maintain steady oil temperature for perfectly crispy wontons.
❄️ Assemble wontons on parchment paper and freeze before cooking for easy storage and batch preparation.
🔥 Reheat wontons in an oven or air fryer to preserve crispiness; avoid microwaving.
