Description

🧀 Cheesy Cabbage Casserole combines tender cabbage with a rich, creamy cheese sauce for a comforting and satisfying dish.
🍽️ This easy-to-make casserole is perfect for weeknight dinners, offering hearty flavors and a crispy buttery topping for great texture.

Ingredients

– 2 quarts chopped cabbage (about 800g) – cooked briefly to tenderize

– 1 (10.5-ounce) can cream of celery soup (or cream of chicken soup) – flavorful creamy base

– 1/4 cup milk – adds moisture and smoothness to the sauce

– 1 cup packed shredded cheese (cheddar or Colby-Jack) – delivers the signature cheesy taste

– 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste) – seasoning essential for balance

– 1/8 teaspoon black pepper – adds subtle spice

– 1 cup finely crushed butter-flavored cracker crumbs (or buttered corn flakes or Italian seasoned bread crumbs) – crunchy topping

– 4 tablespoons melted butter – binds the topping and adds richness

– Optional: 1 medium onion, chopped (for extra flavor)

– Optional protein additions: diced ham, browned ground meat, or sausage to make the dish heartier

Instructions

1-Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 1.5-quart casserole dish with butter or oil.

2-Cook the cabbage: Chop 2 quarts of cabbage and cook it in salted boiling water for 5 to 7 minutes until just tender. Drain thoroughly to remove excess water.

3-Prepare the cheese sauce: In a large bowl, mix 1 (10.5-ounce) can cream of celery soup (or cream of chicken), 1/4 cup milk, 1 cup packed shredded cheese (cheddar or Colby-Jack), 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Microwave gently, stirring occasionally, until the cheese melts and the mixture is creamy.

4-Combine cabbage and sauce: Fold the cooked, drained cabbage into the cheesy sauce mixture and pour this blend into the prepared casserole dish.

5-Prepare the topping: Mix 1 cup finely crushed butter-flavored cracker crumbs (or substitute buttered corn flakes or Italian-seasoned breadcrumbs) with 4 tablespoons melted butter. Sprinkle evenly over the cabbage mixture.

6-Bake: Place the casserole in the oven and bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until bubbly and the topping is lightly golden.

7-Rest and serve: Let the casserole rest for about 5 minutes before serving to allow flavors to meld and the texture to set.

Notes

🥬 Drain cabbage thoroughly to prevent watery casserole.
🧂 Adjust salt carefully, especially if using salted cracker crumbs or ham.
🔥 Bake until bubbly and golden on top for best flavor and texture.
