1 can (14 oz / 397 g) sweetened condensed milk
1 jar (12 oz / 340 g) thick caramel sauce or 14 oz (396 g) unwrapped caramels
5 oz (150 ml) evaporated milk (if using caramels instead of caramel sauce)
1 cup (120 g) crushed toffee bits (or substitute with chopped nuts, crushed candy bars, or butterscotch chips)
1 1/2 cups (360 ml) whipped topping or homemade whipped cream
1/2 cup (90 g) mini chocolate chips for garnish (optional)


Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
2. In a mixing bowl, combine chocolate cake mix and melted butter until crumbly but moldable.
3. Press mixture firmly and evenly into a greased 9×13-inch baking pan, smoothing with bottom of a measuring cup.
4. Bake for 12-14 minutes until just set but soft to touch.
5. While base is warm, poke 20-25 even holes using wooden spoon handle; do not pierce through bottom.
6. Slowly pour sweetened condensed milk evenly over base to seep into holes.
7. Warm caramel sauce slightly and pour evenly over condensed milk layer. For caramels, melt with evaporated milk in microwave, stir until smooth, then spread over base.
8. Sprinkle crushed toffee bits evenly over caramel, pressing gently for adhesion.
9. Refrigerate at least 2 hours or overnight to set.
10. Before serving, spread whipped topping evenly over bars and garnish with mini chocolate chips if desired.
11. For clean cuts, warm knife in hot water and wipe between slices.
