Description

🍏 Enjoy a warm, comforting dessert with this easy old fashioned apple crisp recipe.
🍨 Perfectly balanced between tart apples and a crunchy cinnamon oat topping, it’s a crowd-pleaser for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

6 golden delicious apples peeled and chopped (other varieties like Granny Smith or Fuji can be used)

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon for apple mixture

1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice

1 cup light brown sugar

3/4 cup old fashioned oats (quick oats can be used but will alter texture)

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon for topping

Pinch of kosher salt

1/2 cup cold unsalted butter diced into small cubes

Instructions

1-Preheat oven: Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Butter an 8Γ—8 inch baking dish or spray it with non-stick cooking spray.

2-Prepare apple mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped apples, 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice. Transfer this mixture to the prepared baking dish.

3-Make crumb topping: In a separate bowl, mix 1 cup light brown sugar, 3/4 cup oats, 3/4 cup all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, a pinch of kosher salt, and the cold diced butter. Use a pastry cutter or forks to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until pea-sized crumbs form.

4-Add topping: Evenly spread the crumb topping over the apple mixture and gently pat it down.

5-Bake: Bake for 40 to 50 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.

6-Serve: Serve warm, ideally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

🍽️ To reduce watery filling, add a small amount of flour to the apple mixture.
❄️ This crisp can be prepared ahead, refrigerated or frozen after baking, and reheated before serving.
🍎 Peel apples for smoother texture or leave skins on for added texture and nutrients after thorough washing.
